Janowitz chooses Ayrton Mistral-S for Trey Anastasio’s The Beacon Jams

Marc Janowitz, of e26 design, chose 30 Mistral-S – Ayrton’s highly compact, lightweight and powerful LED spot fixtures – as key features of his lighting design for Trey Anastasio’s The Beacon Jams. The 8-week ‘virtual residency’ was live-streamed weekly from New York’s historic Beacon Theatre throughout October and November 2020.

In an unusual twist, since no audience was present, the filming took place on stage in a reverse set-up, with the musicians facing the back wall and the auditorium acting as a backdrop. “The jam sessions were aimed specifically at the home audience, for which we wanted to create an intimate connection that felt like we brought a series of music sessions into the viewers’ own home,” explains Janowitz. “The reverse angle gave us something more like a studio environment into which Mistral fitted beautifully – it was very much in keeping with the look we were trying to create.”

Janowitz needed a fixture that was light enough to mount on rolling C-stands and small enough to integrate into the performance area, yet full of features and with a great output:

Eighteen Mistrals on C-stands were sited on stage to form a total ‘wrap-around’ that defined the space and gave a bespoke (custom-made) look to the ‘own room’ performances. “We could locate them perfectly in the small spaces between the musicians and instruments from where we used them mainly as backlight and sidelight, as eye candy, and to create beautiful flares behind the performers,” says Janowitz. “They were particularly useful in the reverse set-up to fill the void on camera over the artists’ shoulders.

With different looks to generate for 20+ songs each week over the 8-week residency, with no repetition, Janowitz made full use of Mistral’s gobo and colour palettes. “Mistral has a wide gobo selection which opened up a lot of freedom – I had all the textures I needed,” he says. “It wasn’t so much about tight beam architecture as the aerial textures I achieved by shooting through the stage set and the band. I could get really ‘morphy’ with the gobos and the colour, particularly in the stage-level fixtures which I then mimicked in the Mistrals overhead.”

Although Janowitz originally purposed Mistral as key in creating the ‘near-stage’ picture, he soon incorporated 12 more Mistral fixtures overhead on the Beacon Theatre’s ‘two-ton’ pipe to act as high backlight. “I knew they would be great at 12ft but realised they were also great at 30ft!  From here I was able to use one or two on each musician as a consistent place for the camera to return to between songs. It also meant my nearside, reverse and close overhead lighting were all from the same fixture type, which homogenized how I was able to use color, texture and intensity and gave a beautiful balance.”

Janowitz was also delighted with Mistral’s 6.7° – 53° zoom ratio: “That’s a really great feature. It was narrow enough to light the musicians from overhead without any spill, yet wide enough to light them fully at stage level – without any heat issues – even when placed in close proximity to the artists. That’s no mean feat in such a tightly packed stage and demonstrates exceptional versatility.”

Trey Anastasio’s Beacon Jams marks Janowitz’s first use of Mistral and he was impressed. “Mistral is a great light to keep in my tool box: it’s small and nimble, full of features, with wide dispersion, texture and intensity. Paul Hoffman and Mikey Cummings of Pulse Lighting (lighting supplier for The Beacon Jams) recommended I try out Mistral on many occasions – it really fills the gap in the market for a small bodied, full-featured, punchy fixture. It also looks attractive. As both production and lighting designer, the over-all look of the stage is important, and Mistral is definitely something I welcomed on the set and in the stage design. Those sleek curves and that distinctly French design go a long way! Having used Mistral, I’m keen to check out its bigger Ayrton cousins to see how they scale up.”

All proceeds from The Beacon Jams went to Phish’s The WaterWheel Foundation and its new Divided Sky Fund which was set up by Anastasio to help those affected by addiction and alcoholism, and help further plans to open a treatment centre in Vermont.

Sirkus Finlandia illuminated by Ayrton

Sirkus Finlandia keeps the show on the road with Ayrton

Finland’s biggest touring circus, Sirkus Finlandia, completed a successful tour of the country late last year with a lighting rig composed almost entirely of Ayrton fixtures. The Ayrton products were supplied and supported by Ayrton’s exclusive distributor for Finland, Oy Lafoy Ltd of Helsinki.

Established in 1976, Sirkus Finlandia is a family run business with an international reputation. Before the coronavirus pandemic hit, Sirkus Finlandia had planned a 250-date tour across 115 cities from April to November, with audience capacities of 1600. The pandemic may have delayed its plans but it certainly didn’t stop them. Determined to keep the show on the road, the company still managed to bring its colorful, uplifting show to the Finnish people over the summer, performing 108 shows in 23 cities to reduced audiences from the beginning of June until the start of November – a major achievement in these difficult times.

Sirkus Finlandia’s lighting designer, Eero Auvinen, incorporated Ayrton Perseo IP65-rated fixtures into his design for the first time – a design which already used 6 Ayrton NandoBeam S3 wash lights and 8 Ayrton MagicDot-R. These were rigged over the main ring on trusses suspended from the Big Top’s supporting structures and used pre-show to light the audience and create eye-catching visuals. Throughout the show, the NandoBeam S3 fixtures were used as front lighting, while the MagicDots and Perseo units created an array of wonderful effects, textures and colours that provided a magical ambience for the huge variety of acts.

Ayrton Perseo Profile Fixture

Auvinen has chosen to use Ayrton lighting fixtures on Sirkus Finlandia tours for several years: “We started with MagicDots when we were in need of something light and small for the band stand,” he explains. “Oy Lafoy, which has supplied and supported our lighting equipment on tour for more than 10 years, recommended the MagicDots. Oy Lafoy are a very reliable company and we trust their opinion, so we were happy to try their suggestion. We were very impressed with the MagicDots, so the next year we replaced our front lights with NandoBeam S3s. For 2020, we added Perseo and the results are amazing. This is the first year I have been able to fully utilize gobo projections thanks to Perseo’s good optics and punch. Now we have seen how it performs under show conditions, we are well on our way to making our lighting rig Ayrton-only.”

Auvinen and his team (technical designer, Tuomo Körkkö and AV technician, Tero Juopperi) chose Perseo not only because of its incredible design capacity and feature set, but because it is an IP65 rated, dust-proof fixture. “A Circus is a very demanding environment for lighting fixtures, especially with the horses running around the ring – the amount of dust they create is incredible,” Auvinen says. “The cleaning and service process for our equipment is very time-consuming, and it the ultimate reliability test for any fixture. We needed fixtures that can take this, along with 100+ load-ins each season, and occasional water leaks from the roof of the Big Top. Perseo was able to handle all of this easily and we have saved a lot in maintenance time.

“But what makes the Ayrton fixtures stand out most is their reliability in the harshest of conditions. We can trust completely that the rig will be fully operational in every city we visit!”

Taiwan’s National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) brings Ayrton Khamsin-S to Turandot revival

When Taiwan’s National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) hosted a revival of the German/Taiwanese co-production of Puccini’s Turandot earlier this year, Mr Chien-hao Kuo, lighting designer and head of lighting, boldly chose to replace all the discharge moving lights of the original design with LED fixtures.

He carefully selected 26 Ayrton Khamsin-S profiles which were supplied to the venue from its rental stock by Hispot Workshop of Taipei, Taiwan, a company which has been dedicated to theatre design and equipment rental for over twenty-six years. Mr Kuo’s choice was a considered one as he had used Ayrton Khamsin-S on several operas in the past and knew them to be both powerful and quiet.

Ayrton Khamsin-S fixtures provide drama and nuance for Turandot at National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying)

Ayrton Khamsin-S played a pivotal role at the heart of Mr Kuo’s design by creating leading image effects and using the gobo flow to match the media content. “I kept the fixtures busy in colour changing, gobo rotating and graphic animation,” he says. “All functions were set to work for hours, and we never had to reset the system when the show was in process.”

Khamsin-S’s reliability was also an important factor as Turandot’s stage set design included a semi-circular cyclorama and central slope feature. “Because of these stage features, once the lights were rigged, it would be difficult to access them for any further readjustment,” explains Mr Kuo. “We therefore decided that all the overheads would be Khamsin-S moving lights because it is a very stable fixture. And once they were rigged above the stage, it was very easy to achieve both clean shutter cuts and smooth washes.”

Because Ayrton Khamsin-S is brighter than the fixtures in the original design, and the LED colours are different from those in the discharge units, Mr. Kuo took time to adjust the intensity and colours to correspond with the original look of the production. “In this production, digital media took up the largest proportion of the design, with the lighting forming a balance between the stage and video concepts. Khamsin’s electronic dimmer is very precise and allowed me to make fine adjustments that created a proper bridge between the two.”

National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) is a sleek, wave-shaped, 3.3-hectare (8.15 acre) building which, as the world’s largest single-roof performing arts centre, provided a majestic setting for this internationally popular classic opera. The original co-production between the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) and Deutsche Oper am Rhein premiered in Theater Duisburg, Germany in December 2015, before receiving its Asian premiere at the Weiwuying Opera House in April 2019. The lighting design was a joint creation between Volker Weinhart for Germany and Mr Kuo for Taiwan. This latest revival in August 2020 enjoyed huge success, with a simultaneous live broadcast on Weiwuying’s official YouTube channel that also allowed 50,000 people across the world to enjoy the experience together, without borders.

Tom Kenny chooses Ayrton Khamsin-S for the iHeartCountry Festival 2020

Lighting designer Tom Kenny chose Ayrton Khamsin-S profiles as key lights in his design for this year’s iHeartCountry Festival, presented by Capital One, which was live streamed globally and broadcast on iHeartMedia’s country radio stations on 23 October. Bandit Lites supplied 24 of Ayrton’s Khamsin-S fixtures for this 7th annual celebration of country music which was rescheduled from its original slot in May at the Frank Erwin Centre in Austin, Texas, and relocated to The Steel Mill in Nashville, Tennessee.

Kenny is a lighting designer with over 40 years of experience on both sides of the Atlantic who moves easily between lighting live music and television spectaculars. His client list includes rock superstars like Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, David Byrne, Eric Clapton, David Bowie and The Who, and his television credits number a multiplicity of music award shows, documentaries and TV specials.

“I’d always wanted to use Ayrton’s new fixtures, having used their effects lighting many times before, yet never had the chance until now,” Kenny says. “So when Bandit Lites approached me with the Khamsin-S, I jumped at the opportunity.”

The Khamsin-S fixtures were installed in the overhead grid of The Steel Mill’s 200ft x 79ft studio from where Kenny used them for back, front and key lighting of the bands and as ‘scenery’ for single artists.

Ayrton Khamsin-S puts on a performance with Tom Kenny on the iHeartCountry Festival in Nashville.

“The Khamsins were amazing in all aspects: the colour, power, speed and colour temperature were all perfect for television lighting – the temperatures in particular were just beautiful,” says Kenny. “Every lamp was perfect on set up and stayed perfect without any adjustment.

“I’m very fortunate that many manufacturers ask me to try out their latest fixtures on my TV shows. I like trying new products and can be relied upon to give them an honest opinion. The Khamsins are just fabulous lights and I was really impressed with them.”

The iHeartCountry Festival line up included veteran and new country stars from Dierks Bentley and Lady A to Kelsea Ballerini and Dustin Lynch, and Kenny made sure the Khamsin-S fixtures were kept busy throughout the day and night.

Kenny was also impressed with the output of the Khamsin, despite The Steel Mill’s throw distance being shorter than he is used to. “You could see the Khamsins had lots of power and depth to spare even though the trim height at The Steel Mill is only 25ft. They were up against a grid of very powerful other products and lots of heavy smoke effects, but they cut their way through everything with ease. They kept their colour and shape and performed wonderfully under the stress. They are just gorgeous and I’m going to start spec’ing them on many more shows.”

This is something that pleases the Festival’s lighting vendors, Bandit Lites, a long-time advocate of Ayrton. “Mike Golden and I were really pleased that Tom spec’d Khamsin-S on the recent iHeart event at the Steel Mill,” says Dizzy Gosnell, Production Director at Bandit Lites who points out: “The missing link for lighting companies has been the availability of a high output LED powered profile head, and the Ayrton Khamsin-S really ticks all the boxes for us at Bandit with its features. Of course, not having a bulb in there to ‘go brown on you’ is a major deal for companies and designers alike. And add to that the thumping output coming out of the front end, great beam width capacity, colour mixing, good framing, 540º pan, good CRI for video, to name just a few. We’re really happy that we have the Khamsin-S in our arsenal at Bandit.”

Star appearance for Ayrton Khamsin in Singapore

The Star Performing Arts Centre in Singapore is proud to have taken its first-ever stock of Ayrton LED moving heads with the recent addition of Ayrton Khamsin profile fixtures to its lighting inventory. 44 Khamsin-S and 6 Khamsin-TC fixtures were supplied to the landmark venue by Ayrton’s exclusive distributor for the region, Total Solution Marketing Pte Ltd.

The majority of its new Khamsin profiles have been installed in the 5000-seat Star Theatre, The Star Performing Arts Centre’s key venue, which prides itself on its state-of-the-art stage technology. The Star Theatre hosts a wide range of amplified music and speech events, including large scale, high-profile conferences, pop concerts and dance performances, and recently hosted the Singapore National Day 2020 Concert.

Ayrton Khamsin was chosen after the team at The Star Performing Arts Centre carried out comprehensive research to find LED moving head replacements for the venue’s existing inventory of 1.2kW discharge fixtures. “Our original objective in moving to LED was to save power, but Khamsin has given us a lot more besides,” says Azhar. “We executed a shoot-out at the venue which proved that Khamsin was the only LED fixture then on the market compatible with our 1.2kW fixtures.

Their performance in terms of output is so much more than we expected, plus they also give us rich colours and a variety of new, fresh gobo designs to choose from. To top it all off, Khamsin also has an in-built shutter/shaper function which helps us achieve a more focused and precise projection area which is especially valuable for those all-important key lights.

“Above all, we are just so impressed at the output capability of Khamsin compared to our previous 1.2kW fixtures and how much less power is required to run these fixtures.”

Lakeshore Drive-In live music venue opens in Chicago with Ayrton Perseo from LEC Event Technology

The long, hot summer of COVID-19 saw live music safely come back to Chicago’s lakefront with the new Lakeshore Drive-In venue.  Artist management company AudisBliss spearheaded the project working with LEC Event Technology, Inc. (LEC) to transform a parking lot just west of the Adler Planetarium into an in-person concert venue that keeps the safety of the attendees, artists and employees in mind.

LEC provided Ayrton Perseo-S fixtures for the stage, the first compact, multi-function luminaire with an IP65 enclosure rating developed for intensive outdoor use.

“The Lakeshore Drive-In is one of the most respected drive-in operations in the country and the only sustainable drive-in model in Chicago, which is operating very successfully within COVID guidelines,” says Matt Brotz, owner and director of Operations at LEC.  “LEC took on the role of hardware provider producing the event under a strict budget and with no room for failure.  We’ve been very happy with the Ayrton Perseo fixtures and so has the client.”

“With the Lakeshore Drive-In we’ve given our guests the closest experience to a normal live show,” notes Adam Weiss, co-founder of AudisBliss.  “We put on these concert events to bring gigs back to the community and give people the opportunity to enjoy live music safely – and see the best views in the city.  Chicago needed this.”

The parking lot accommodates about 200 socially-distanced cars; guests can leave their vehicles to set up chairs within the boundaries of their parking spaces.  Delivery of food and artist merchandise is available.  The venue has hosted a minimum of three shows per week this summer with headliners including Lil Yachty, Mic Jenkins and Ric Wilson, Peekaboo and Autograf.

“LEC was asked to design a stage for the Lakeshore Drive-In that would highlight the talent, adapt to social distancing regulations, and be robust and sustainable for the run of the shows,” Brotz explains. “The stage had to be both impactful and practical standing up to weather along the lakefront.”

Twenty-four Ayrton Perseo IP65-rated fixtures are in the lighting rig with 12 pre-rigged on the truss, six positioned on the ground and another six available to supplement the truss-mounted units.  LEC invested in an inventory of Perseo units earlier this year.

“We chose Perseos for the venue for their robust performance outdoors,” Brotz says.  “We didn’t want to constantly set and strike rigs.”  He notes that, “Perseo is brighter than any light in its class.  The LED unit is cost effective, and its gobo set and optics are phenomenal.  It’s also lightweight so no special engineering is required.”

According to Brotz, “many of the lighting designers coming through who are using Perseo for the first time just love it.  They always compliment its flat field and the sharpness of its optics through the air – Perseos cover a lot of territory.”

“LEC has been a dedicated ACT Lighting supporter over the years and with their early adoption of the new MA3 platform and recently released Ayrton IP65 Perseo fixtures along with a growing inventory of MDG Atmospheric machines their continued investment in cutting edge entertainment technology exemplifies their commitment to excellence,” says ACT Lighting Regional Sales Manager, Aaron Hubbard.

During the coronavirus pandemic setting up a safe live music venue certainly has been a challenge.  “The failure of other drive-ins reminded us what not to do,” says Weiss.  “Stress is high, but it’s all worth it when you see the positive fan [reactions].”  And the same has been true with performers.  “No artists have walked off stage without a smile on their faces,” he reports.

Ayrton Ghibli and Diablo take up residence at London’s Southbank Centre

London’s iconic Southbank Centre has stood proudly on the south bank of the river Thames for nearly 70 years. A celebration of progress and modernity, Europe’s largest arts venue was built in 1951 for the Festival of Britain and, under normal circumstances, stages over 2000 performances of music, dance and literature a year, and more than 2000 free events.

Like all arts venues, the Southbank Centre is not immune to the economic and cultural upheaval caused by COVID-19 but, prior to lockdown, the Southbank Centre had, over the past two years, made a long-term commitment to LED performance lighting, with complete moving head installations in the fixed rigs of three of its performance spaces: the 2700-seat Royal Festival Hall, 916-seat Queen Elizabeth Hall and the 295-seat Purcell Room.

As part of this drive towards LED, the team at the Southbank Centre invested in Ayrton Ghibli and Diablo profile fixtures, supplied to the Southbank Centre by White Light, which bring a new uniformity and quality to its moving head inventory.

Senior technician, Cressy Klaces, agrees with Hennigan: “The Ghiblis are easy to use, have good colours and great colour mixing, and the dimmer curve is just brilliant. They are extremely diverse tools – you can do so many interesting things with them in a way that was not possible with the other contenders in the shootout.  The shutters are superb – there are very few times when I can’t position them precisely where I want – and the rotating gobos interact amazingly with the animation wheel. The animation wheel brings great subtlety and adds texture and depth – I’ve been able to create beautiful water effects with them with an almost imperceptible, slightly shifting ripple that works beautifully on the dark floor of the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

“The Ghiblis are ideal for us as they can go from a rock concert to a kid’s concert to a dance show to theatre with ease. They have a very good quality of light and a zoom which covers all our needs. It’s a good concert light that can also do theatre, and I really love them. I’d be very happy if someone gave me a load of those to tour with because I’d have all the tools in one package.”

In addition to the Ghibli investment, 6 Ayrton Diablo were purchased for Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room. “Diablo is like a smaller version of the Ghibli with all the features,” says Klaces. “Other than the lack of the second gobo wheel, they are just as versatile as Ghibli, and so bright we are considering moving them to the Queen Elizabeth Hall. It is such a compact unit, it is perfect for any studio like the Purcell Room – they are so strong a fixture they could handle either space easily.”

“I’ve been utterly and thoroughly impressed with the reliability of the new Ayrton lights,” concludes Hennigan. Like many venues, the Southbank Centre is currently closed but continues to prepare for a future with the latest, most versatile equipment, and plans to reopen in the Spring of 2021.

Ayrton Ghibli is a 23,000 lumen, 600W LED profile with a beam range of 7°-56°. The first Ayrton spot luminaire with a 100% framing system, Ghibli is packed full of features for unlimited creative possibilities without any compromise on quality or output.

Ayrton Diablo is a 19,000 lumen, 300W little brother to Ghibli. With a 7°-53° beam range and a full set of features, it can almost rival its bigger sibling toe to toe!

Ayrton Appoints LSystemsPro LLC as its exclusive distributor for Armenia

Ayrton is delighted to welcome LSystemsPro LLC as its new exclusive distributor for Armenia. The new appointment takes place with immediate effect.

Based in the Armenian capital of Yerevan, LSystemsPro is the country’s leading company for sales, design and installation of many major brands of professional lighting and audio equipment.

“We work with many big event companies and large-scale venues, where we both sell and install the products we represent,” explains LSystemsPro founder and CEO, George Hakobyan. “We have been following the development of Ayrton closely and see there is great potential in the brand. We love the design and functionality of Ayrton products and believe there is great scope for the full range of their fixtures in this market.”

LSystemsPro’s views were compounded by feedback received from other sales and rental companies and designers who have experience of using Ayrton products, including their Russian partners: “Ayrton fixtures have an in-built flexibility which makes them ideal for the variety of uses that our small market demands. We are using this time of quarantine during the coronavirus pandemic to prepare our showrooms for when we can open up again and start to demonstrate the new Ayrton equipment directly to our customers. We are expecting busy times ahead!”

“Parallel to our existing distributor network and direct customer contacts, the new collaboration with LSystemsPro represents a great opportunity for Ayrton to enter emergent markets such as the CIS territories,” says Ayrton’s Kseniia Igoshkina. “LSystemsPro’s expertise and sustainable solutions open up new opportunities for both existing and new customers to understand the full potential of the technology Ayrton offers. We are looking forward and very excited to be working with Georgi and his professional team.”

Ayrton MiniPanel-FX deliver major wow factor at Vela, one of China’s newest nightclubs

Suzhou in China is one of the fastest growing major cities in the world, situated just 100km west of Shanghai on the lower Yangtze River. It boasts many interesting historic and modern attractions, not least its latest nightclub, the 800-capacity Vela, which opened its doors in December 2019.

Lighting designer, Andy Taylor of Gasoline Design, was called in to provide the dynamic lighting for the club and chose to use a whopping 174 Ayrton MiniPanel-FX for his design. He explains his choice: “I have used Ayrton products on nightclub install designs before, most notably DreamPanel™Twin in Jewel, Las Vegas, and MagicPanel™-R and MagicBlade™-R in Omnia at Caesar’s Palace, also in Las Vegas. The fittings worked with spectacular effect in both of those designs, so when I was looking for something different to use as the workhorse of the effect lighting for Vela, the MiniPanel-FX was a natural choice. The client was also keen for the design to look like nothing he had seen anywhere else and to create that elusive ‘wow’ factor. Having a large array of MiniPanels ticked both those boxes to great effect.

“I don’t recall seeing any fixtures with the same square lens configuration as MiniPanel-FX, which was a big selling point. The most important thing for me is quality of function and reliability – I don’t want to put 174 fixtures in a design and get 174 different shades of white – and with Ayrton you can guarantee uniformity, even after many hours of use.”

Taylor was able to use the MiniPanel-FX to achieve the dynamic effect he wanted for the club. “The MiniPanels are primarily rigged in clusters at the centre of six rectangular moving pods. The intention was to create a ‘ceiling’ of moving light capable of being pixel-mapped as a low resolution screen that can mirror and complement the club’s LED screen content, as well as create massive in-air moving beam looks. There are also 40 MiniPanel-FX mounted on the back wall behind the DJ, sited in between, above, below and in two rows either side of strips of LED screen. These create beam and pixel-mapped effects that shoot out into, and over the guests.”

“Once the resident techs learnt how to program these unique fixtures, they were very excited about the potential of the looks they could achieve with MiniPanel-FX, which is always refreshing to see. It’s important that the guys who have to look after, program and operate the system night after night are as excited about its potential as I am.”

“We are so happy with the performance and results from the MiniPanel-FX,” says Vela’s general manager, Julie Zhou. “It’s very important to us to emphasise Vela’s unique structure in the best light, and the MiniPanels deliver this with amazing colour and a great quality, soft light. The house technicians enjoy having individual colour control over MiniPanel-FX’s four lenses, which they haven’t experienced with other comparatively-sized moving heads.  The result is we now have a club that is very dramatic and full of colour, which we all like very much!”

Ayrton has included all the weatherproofing features of Perseo and given it the same minimalist design, reduced visual footprint and, for maximum effectiveness, a liquid cooling system with six IP68-rated submersible fans outside its weatherproof enclosure.

Fitted with a 178 mm frontal lens, Domino’s proprietary optical system uses 13 lenses, producing a 10:1 zoom ratio and a zoom range of 6° to 60°. The exceptional optics deliver an extremely uniform flat beam with no hot spot and reproduce impeccable high-definition images over the entire zoom range.

Feature-rich from the factory, Domino has a sophisticated subtractive CMY colour mixing system combined with a variable CTO and a wheel with six complementary colours for infinite pastel and saturated colours. The framing section allows accurate positioning of each of its 4 shutter blades across a 100% surface area. The image section includes 14 interchangeable HD glass gobos on two wheels. The effects section contains two dynamic effect-wheels with continuous movement in both directions, a CMY multi-layered wheel for creating multi-coloured effects, a standard monochromatic effect-wheel, a 15-blade iris diaphragm, two frost filters (for light and heavy diffusion), CRI and TM30 optimising filters, two rotating prisms (one circular with 5 facets and one linear with 4 facets), a dynamic sparkle effect with speed and fade adjustment, and an electronic dimmer.

Domino is available in S and TC versions: Domino-S delivers metallic white light with a record-breaking output of 51,000 lumens at a colour temperature of 7000K for incredible brightness; Domino-TC is calibrated at a colour temperature of 6000K with a CRI greater than 90 and very high TM30 readings for perfect colour rendition.

Weighing in at 52kg, Domino is designed for stadium-sized settings and intensive outdoor use. This Master of the Elements is ready to take on the most extreme conditions and is shipping with immediate effect.

Ayrton appoints LiteNordic as new exclusive distributor for Sweden, Denmark & Norway

Ayrton is delighted to announce the appointment of LiteNordic as its new exclusive distributor for Sweden, Norway and Denmark. The new arrangement takes place with immediate effect in Sweden and Denmark, and from 1 July in Norway.

Formed in January 2018, LiteNordic is a ‘young’ lighting distribution company with many years of industry experience due to its team of skilled and knowledgeable individuals.  LiteNordic identifies as a proudly Scandinavian operation with offices and sales teams in Sweden, Norway and Denmark, and a comprehensive network of partners in all three countries.

“We work closely with influencers such as lighting designers for live and corporate events and installation projects,” says Espen Bechmann, LiteNordic’s sales manager for Norway. “And as Norway, Sweden and Denmark are small countries, we work alongside partners in many fields in each country to ensure the end user gets the right solution for each project.”

Two years after its formation, LiteNordic had been looking to expand its product portfolio and found Ayrton matched all its criteria for LED moving lights.

“Ayrton has been on our radar for a while,” says LiteNordic CEO, Magnus Lönden. “They are innovative company with an original and extremely versatile product line, and we like the team – it was a perfect match for us.”

Ayrton’s Jonas Stenvinkel agrees: “A company is made up of the people who work and manage it and, with that in mind, LiteNordic really stands out on the Nordic market with their professional, pure-distribution approach. They have, in a very short time, established themselves as the only true Nordic distribution partner in our industry.”

“We are very excited about this new arrangement and are looking forward to a dynamic partnership with LiteNordic for many years to come,” says Ayrton’s Linnea Ljungmark. “In difficult times like these, it is a source of confidence to have them on board.”

Ayrton is very happy to introduce Kseniia Igoshkina as the latest member of its international sales team. Based in Detmold, Germany, Igoshkina is responsible for emerging markets across the Baltic countries, the CIS states and South America.

Igoshkina joined Ayrton at the end of 2019, since when she has quickly established her position by appointing new distributors in Belarus, Armenia, Romania/Moldova, Colombia, Panama and the Caribbean. Her previous experience includes 2 years at Astera LED Technologies as key account manager based in China, after which she relocated to Europe to look for new challenges.

“My first experience of Ayrton was its famous lightshow,” she says. “I was immediately blown away by their unique products. Now, a few years later, I am working for this amazing company and I couldn’t be happier.

Ayrton Diablo tours Sweden for the first time with Riksteatern’s Love Songs

Riksteatern, the Swedish National Touring Theatre, was due to take its production of Love Songs on a three month tour of Sweden from early March, with lighting director and designer, Jörgen ‘Hajen’ Haimanas, choosing 6 Ayrton Diablo LED profile luminaires as a major feature of his lighting design, in what would be Diablo’s first national tour of Sweden. Due to the current COVID-19 crisis, the tour was only able to complete the first five dates before it was necessarily postponed by lockdown. Love Songs is described as a ‘sentimental love bomb’, a musical evening depicting love in all its forms, featuring the musical talents of Arja Saijonmaa, Frida Beckman, Lisa Hu Yu, Robert Hannouch and Peter Järn. Haimanas used his considerable lighting talents, to create an incredible array of looks using the six strategically placed Diablo units in a design crafted to cope with the many sizes and types of venue they would visit on the tour.

“As the National Touring Theatre of Sweden, Riksteatern makes a point of bringing top quality dance and theatre productions to a multitude of unconventional venues as well as traditional theatres, to reach as diverse an audience country-wide as possible,” says Haimanas. “This necessarily entails playing several venues which are not conventional theatres and therefore not equipped to the usual standards and specifications of a theatre.

“Under these circumstances, a fixture’s weight, zoom range and power consumption become even more vital where trussing might not be heavy duty, and available height can be restricted. So I needed a profile fixture that was compact, lightweight, super-flexible and full of features that could handle the many smaller and varied venues on the tour.”

Haimanas admits he was first attracted to Diablo by its name: “It called to me! I looked up the technical specifications and it sounded perfect for our work as a touring company: small, light-weight, powerful and small enough to fit four units into a single flightcase – all very important considerations on tour. Then Ayrton’s Linnea Ljungmark brought one for us to test out and I was stunned – it had a good dimming curve and an excellent zoom range – just what I was looking for. I got my wish!”

The six Diablo were supplied by Stage and EventLight of Stockholm and were the only profile fixtures in Haimanas’ rig: four were rigged overhead and another two mounted at stage level, upstage of the bold, red central set piece. “The dominating set feature is a large scarlet ‘frame’ which is finished in a shiny red surface,” explains Haimanas.

Haimanas chose to restrict his colour palette, preferring instead to play with the bold colours of the set using a combination of Diablo’s high output, metallic white (7000K) light and haze: “The things you can do with smoke and white light is amazing! It’s a matter of good angles and timing. I wanted to create almost a cartoon-like effect with hard backlight from one Diablo on each performer, and played with the effect of stretching long shadows across the stage.”

“Jorgen was able to create so many different atmospheres and looks for each and every song throughout the show,” says Ljungmark who saw the performance at Riksteatern’s home venue in Stockholm. “It was fabulous to see how super-creative he could be with just six Diablo units, and illustrates just how versatile Diablo is.
Shows don’t have to be big-scale to create a big impression, and Ayrton has fixtures to suit all sizes of venue.”

“One of the reasons we looked at Diablo was, of course, its LED source,” says Haimanas. “The environmental benefits are obvious, like its low power consumption and reduced transportation requirements (4 per case). But LED is the way sources are going, and the fact that Ayrton has created such good LED fixtures certainly helps the
transition away from conventional source fixtures.

“I like the features and colours of Diablo and it was very easy to program. Diablo’s versatility is a great touring feature and its ability to zoom out wide to cover the whole stage and simultaneously cope with the lower trim heights of some venues, as well the distances involved in a conventional theatre, was invaluable.

“But it is the size and weight, with no loss of features or output, that is the most fantastic thing about Diablo. It is much easier to plan ahead with the varying tour venues when you know weight is not an issue. I am very, very happy with our new Diablos. It is such a shame to see the remainder of the tour unfulfilled but we look forward to resuming in safer times and continuing to bring the work of this much-valued touring company to audiences all over Sweden.”
